A Day in the Life - My New Reality
I love reading Day in the Life posts from my favorite bloggers. It's sort of like the blogosphere's version of reality television, isn't it? And we all know how much I love reality TV!
I can't tell you how many people ask me, "So what are you going to do all day?" when I tell them I've quit my job. The short answer is, everything I should have been doing for my business, home and self before I quit. When you're side-hustling seven days a week and 18 hours a day, which I was doing for far too long, things get neglected and the things you do get done, don't get done well.
There definitely won't be a shortage of things to do to keep me busy, I'm not worried about that at all. What I'm most looking forward to though, is doing more of the things that light me up, less of what doesn't, finishing projects that have been on the back burner, working when I feel like working, resting when I feel like resting, and working where and when I want to.
So here is what a day in the life looks in my new reality.......
5:30am - Alarm Goes Off
One thing I don't plan to change about my daily routine is waking up before the sun. Nothing energizes me more than a good, early start to the day. The only difference now is that the alarm rings at 5:30 instead of 3:45.
On this particular morning I was feeling so sore from two strong days at the gym, so I decided to skip the heavy workout and enjoy my coffee on the couch with my dogs.
After coffee I did a quick, 10-minute relaxing flow followed by a 5-minute meditation. I journaled, showered and headed out the door.
8:30am - Private Yoga Class
Another exciting thing about controlling my own schedule is being able to say yes to opportunities like this. I subbed for a friend and taught a group of ladies outside, under the sun.
For the first day this year we experienced perfect weather, so it was an extra great way to start the class. After class I made a Target run and grabbed an early lunch to-go at chic-fil-a (<----- my favorite!).
11:00am - Work/Plan/Answer emails
From lunch I went straight to one of my favorite coffee spots, Cocoa Beanery, to bang out some work. Our 50-Hour Teacher Training starts next weekend at STUDIO B, so I took this quiet time to organize the outline, update the handouts from last year and order the books for the training. Speaking of things I'm looking forward to about being in business for myself, one of them is deciding WHERE I work from. On a day like we had yesterday, who wouldn't want to work outside under the sun???
11:30am - Meeting
I got a good chunk of work done in a short window of time before meeting with a friend and fellow studio-owner, Pat. Pat recently bought Yoga On Chocolate which is where I began my yoga journey years ago. YOC is only about 8 miles from STUDIO B, but they are actually a world apart. A very high-traffic road with way too many stop lights separates our studios and NOBODY is making that drive if they don't have to. It's nice to be so close without stepping on one another's toes. Pat has such great energy and I'm so excited for him to take on this new venture. We will be teaming up to offer a 200-hour teacher training in the fall and I couldn't be more excited. It's going to be magical!!!
1:00pm - Run
I decided to continue the outdoor theme and took the dogs for a run. We stopped at the half-way point to enjoy the views. Champ and Livy love being outside as much as I do. I often have to leave Champ at home because he freaks out when he sees other dogs, so it was nice to enjoy an off time at the park without the stress of running into another dog.
2:00pm - Relax
Like I mentioned earlier, one of the great things about designing my own work schedule is being able to rest when I fell like resting. I am very much a morning person and have NEVER been productive in the afternoons. Yesterday I knew I still had a full evening ahead of me, so I decided to take advantage of this down time. I soaked in an epsom salt bath, enjoyed a cup of hot tea, did some reading and even watched some Real Housewives of Orange County re-runs. BTW, who else is excited for the new season that starts in June? *raises hand high*
5:30pm - Class at STUDIO B
After a few hours of R&R, I headed to the studio to teach back-to-back classes - Power Vinyasa flow at 5:30 and Week 2 of the Beginner Series at 6:45. The Beginner Series has been such a hit at the studio and it is one of my favorite classes to teach. I loving witnessing people discover how accessible yoga is and watching them transform. I'm hoping to bring this series to the interwebs very soon <--- speaking of projects that have been on the back burner!
10:00pm - BED
It was 8:30pm by the time I got home. Just enough time to feed and take out the dogs, clean up, grab a light dinner and hit the bed.
So that's it. A Day in the Life of my new reality. It makes me wonder how I ever had time to work a 9-5 in the first place!
Q: Are you a morning person or a night owl? When do you feel most productive?
