Hey there! Long time, no blog. I know it's not Friday just yet, but I felt inspired to write and wanted to stick with the theme I've used in the past so, here it is - Friday Favorites on a Thursday! Here are some of the things I've been enjoying lately.....
1.) A Seat at The Table
Solange's new album, "A Seat at the Table" is one of the most beautiful pieces of work I've ever listened to. Her pride in herself, her family and her culture shines through and I find it so inspiring. The warm, mellow vibe of the album is perfect for this time of year. I definitely have this album on repeat while I'm working, driving, practicing yoga, cooking, etc. I liked her last album a lot, but A Seat at The Table is definitely on another level.
2.) Vegan Chili
The return of cooler temps, shorter days, and football on Sunday's always means one thing for me: the return of chili. Over the years I've racked up a few favorite recipes, but recently found one that blows them all out of the water: White Bean Chili with Jalapeno Bulgur. You had me at Jalapeno. Click the pic below to get the recipe.
3.) Meditation Cushion
I finally bought a meditation cushion and it has been SUCH a game changer! I have always had a hard time getting comfortable in meditation. Either my legs go numb, my knees start to hurt or my low back acts up. Well, not anymore. Not only is the cushion beautiful and handmade, but it has totally changed the way I sit and allows me to sit comfortably for 10+ minutes. I bought this one at Yoga on Chocolate, but will try to get some in STUDIO B soon. Here's a tip: take some (read: a lot) of the filling out before you use it. It won't look as full and pretty, but it will allow you to find a more comfortable seat.
By the way, if you are interested in learning more about meditation, starting on October 26th the Kalpa Bhadra Kadampa Buddhist Center of Harrisburg will begin offering weekly guided meditation classes at STUDIO B.
4.) Human Connection
I've been spending a lot of time connecting and working with friends over the past few weeks and it has reminded me that there is really nothing more important than human connection, especially when coffee is involved : )
It is great to see my friends, colleagues and students up to big things. I love having a network of strong, smart, driven people to bounce ideas off of, partner with, support and get support from. This definitely wasn't always the case for me and for a long time I had a very me-againt-the-world type of attitude. Letting my guard down has resulted in some beautiful relationships that I truly value and am very grateful for.
5.) Home Workouts
I have a confession: I haven't been to the gym in months! I canceled my gym membership when I left my job because it was just too far away from my home/the studio and I haven't found a new one yet. Instead I've been practicing a lot of yoga, walking/running outside and doing circuit style workouts at home. I created a Full-Body Kettlebell Fat Burning workout for Paleo Hacks recently that you can check out here.
6.) Foot Massages While I Work
This morning after grabbing coffee with a friend, I stopped by the nail salon for a very-much-needed pedicure. Not only did I get a chance to knock out a few chapters of the book I've been reading, but I tied up the final loose ends on a project that's been in the works for a while. There's nothing like being productive and getting a foot massage at the same time and it definitely beats sitting at a desk. By the way, I'll be making a formal announcement on Monday about that little project so definitely check back in then!
7.) This. Face.
Do I even need to explain this one? This face, and Livy's too, will always and forever be on my list of favorite things.
8.) Yogasana Mats
Special shout out to Emilie for introducing me to the Yogasana Mats. These mats, now available at STUDIO B, are eco-friendly, made from 100% natural cotton and hand woven in India. Each mat comes with a card signed by the master weaver who created it. They are reversible, cold-water washable and come with a 15-year guarantee, but are intended to last a lifetime. I've been using mine over my mat, but you can purchase a thin, rubber backing to lay under it so it doesn't move on hard floors. Learn more about Yogasana here.
That's all for today. I hope you have a great weekend and don't forget to check back in on Monday ; )
